Dogs I'm a dude on The Uniform Project, bow wow!

It has been a major exciting and intense month with Sarah's pilot-hood at The U.P. We pulled one last all-nighter to make this LBD- Little Black Dashiki- come to life! Ok its more like a one piece track suit, but I could definitely make it my uniform.

About the Mackswell LBD:
The inspiration was Dashiki meets Little Black Dress. When Sheena (founder of The Uniform Project) asked if I would be the first male to make a guest appearance with The U.P. (I did a nifty lil dance) and immediately starting envisioning something that could be a fitted, formal-esc suit with a secret built in expansion mansion. This thing Pajamas Hood! Serious, this morning on our walk back from the shoot all my bois in Bedstuy were already passing me props. My Dude King Kobra: "Damn Mackswell! You got some *ucked up style!" He wanted to trade me jumpsuits.. Next time.

Because we are raising money for City Harvest with ...the help of the uniform project. Sarah is the U.P. pilot, Lil' Snotty wears the same little black dress everyday for a month and accessorizes. Spreading the fun of sustainable fashion and raising awareness and fund$ for a great cause. You cant argue with that.

So if you caught yesterday's blog post, you know that we were just featured in Helsingborgs Dagblad , a Swedish Newspaper. ( http://hd.se/)

The article was based on interviews with three American fashion designers. Here's our answers to the interview with a brief summary of the entire article at the end:

When, how and why did you start working with recycled materials?

We started upcycling right off the bat when we founded Ruffeo Hearts Lil Snotty in Olympia Washiington. That would have been in 2005.. Although we dont really claim the first two years cus we were figuring things out in a major way. Drawing inspiration from vintage sweatshirts and jackets was a huge part of those figuring things out years. How did we start recycling? : It involved a lot of digging at Good Will and Value Village, gotta love mondays at value village, thats when things get marked down to $1!! Back in those days we'd get a (preferably large) vintage crew and turn the sleeves into a sars guard hood, then we'd tack arms on from a different sweatshirt or jacket. Seam ripping all these garments apart to make them fit properly really informed our pattern making department. Why? Well we launched as a sustainable clothing line and continue to structure our business to operate sustainably, so we wanted to source fabric with a 0 impact carbon footprint. It was lofty and idealistic and turned out to be majorly too time consuming to do production in said manner. We moved to Seattle and found a gold mine of bulk neon sweatshirt fleece at goodwill and it changed our lives forever. We learned one can actually streamline production when you cut from bolts rather than fragments and used garments. So now we use a mix of recycled materials and new fabric from ethically operating mills from mainly Turkey and India.

Which materials have you worked with so far? Which are your favorites? Any material you would like to use in the future?

I think we kinda covered past materials in the last question. Mackswells fave material is 80/20 cotton/poly sweatshirt fleece.... Sarah likes athletic mesh. We want to start designing/producing with that new washable sewable PAPER! Yes you will see RHLS using paper a bit in late 2011/12.

What recycled materials will we see more of 2011? How will the green trend develop, do you think? Or in which direction would you like it to go?

Paper. seriously its genius. I hear theres some new wearable/brethable plastic too, with like zip lock thingies as zippers. Future finally! We keep talking about recycling in this interview. And its kind of a loose term.. Not trying to be a chump and attack your vocabulary here but I think this is an important time (in the interview and in the world) to define "recycling" as it applies to the fashion industry. Recycling to me means to re use a thing. Then theres upcycling that means taking a thing and turning it into something new. And Deadstock is kind of in the middle because its abandoned and destined to become trash if the right people dont find it and save it (the right people =s rag traders or inventive designers who explore). I think the future of green will not be to source from deadsotck or recycle or upcycle exactly.. because those are finite fabric sources and techniques for clothing manufacturing. I believe we are going to use manufacturer/consumer waste of all kinds (paper, plastic, fabric remnants, minerals, even cracking open some landfills would help!) and create new synthetic textiles. You get me? We cant make everything from used materials forever if the trend becomes popular (vintage/ deadstock) will run out. we perceive a deficit in sustainable fabric, even the process of turning bamboo into jersey or canvas is dependent heavily on chemical processes. No better than the process of creating cotton. It would be really nice to avoid further environmental degeneration before the planet is totally fucked. So we asking our final customers to think about every step the process of how the things they buy are made. Slave labor is some archaic bullshit that needs to stop. Thats a no brainer. But also we are asking our customers to ask their favorite designers how their source material is made. If its not done transparently and sustainably humans aren't going to make it for the long haul.

Edible clothing and textiles with vitamins or medicine inside it… There are many exciting experiments going on right now -
If you had a time machine and traveled to 2050, what do you think people are wearing and what is it made of?

What do you wear yourself? Do you buy new or vintage?

We dont make a ton of purchases honestly. But when we do we buy from local designers who are made in the USA. Ok I'll admit my Patricia Field hat is made in Viet Nam, you cant get everything made in the USA/the same town you live in, but we're working to kill that trend. We'd buy vintage more but its so damn trendy in NYC (button up vintage shirt =s $45-$75) that you might as well spend the extra $20 to $50 and buy designer gear. We wear a lot of our own stuff. Im wearing an XXXXL Sars guard Quadrocepticon Hoody n quad leggings right now. Sarahs got some "stretch fucking denim" pants on from Pat Field, and a shirt from Magick Outlaw on (t shirt designer carried at our store "MOVES").

Please mention your role models, perhaps other designers or people that recycle within other fields?
No actually our heros generally arent in the fashion industry.. Tho Tara St. James the designer behind "Study NYC" is an amazing inspiration to us. She gave a lecture at our store about clothing manufacturing local vs outsource and was very open about her past experience producing out of Inda and her current production in NYC.. Shes a gem. Other than that my heros tend to be visionary sci fi writers and film makers.. Robert A. Heinlein, Phillip K Dick, John Waters... Heinlein strikes me as a bit of a misogynist religious fucker but you see him transending it in his career..

Do you have any fashion DIY recycling projects to recommend our readers, how to make a purse out of a pair of jeans or something along those lines..? Could be anything inspiring!

Our friend Josefin gave us a summary about the rest of the article and told us it "basically talks about how recycling fabrics in the fashion industry is becoming a trend. Mostly because fabrics are expensive but also the environmental aspect of it, and that every piece of garment becomes unique. The disadvantage of recycling fabrics is that it's almost impossible to mass produce, you can almost always make only one of each.

Then they talk about the other guys; one of them is using brass (?) to make jewelery, the other one made evening gowns using mosquito nets and other stuff from the military surplus store ( for her spring collections she has used British military parachutes from the 1960's)."

We had a party. It was totally insane. There was ribbon cutting, Balloons dropped, Anna from These Are Powers led a very touching toast, toasting almost 3 years of RHLS in NYC, and the cumulation of many awesome experiences (such as Outfitting Powers for music video Easy Answers) into the actualization of the new store. If you were there you understand that we had like 500 people throughout the night. It was pretty much divine chaos.. But we're not sure everyone realized that it was the opening of "The RHLS Store!" After years of honing their skills at making kick ass clothing right here in Brooklyn with transparent business practices, RHLS works with the most diverse, iconoclastic and original fashion show production house (WFW) to take a POP UP SHOP idea to the next level.
This holiday season ( starting Nov. 5th and ending Dec. 19th) not only will you be able to buy locally made clothing, accessories and art, but you will also have the opportunity to hear lectures by seasoned professionals in the field of clothing manufacturing, to educate the general public in being a more conscientious consumer as well as budding designers looking to take steps toward creating their own business'.
Each weekend will also feature local bands and djs along with drink sponsors creating specialty cocktails specifically for the event.

Ruffeo Hearts Lil’ Snotty (RHLS) and Williamsburg Fashion Weekend present: "MOVES, a movement for independent Industry." Introducing a new pop-up shop in Greenpoint, slated to become the crux of Brooklyn design culture. MOVES features 23 established and up and coming designers, artists, and performances by musicians from New York City, all hand-picked to provide a potent shopping experience during the holiday season. No craft fair flair. No hodgepodge of styles. MOVES is sleek and unified with a focus on culture and community.

MOVES is open for 7 four-day weekends starting November 5 ending December 19th. On Opening night Brooklyn-based bands Total Slacker and Alaskas will entertain the masses with a free all ages show. Following weekends will include DJS and TBA bands to continue the musical menagerie. Tutorials will be given teaching new clothing lines and seamsters how to gear production practices towards being stream lined and more cost efficient. Lectures will be given by local experts informing small business owners how to gain access to grants and loans. A production house will offer talks informing business owners how to have small additions of product locally produced in an affordable manner. Come for the education. Come for the music. Come for the alcohol. Come to experience the best of independent business.

What is this post really all about?

Dude, the Fader Podcast did a feature on MNDR, and she's wearing our new Quadrocepticon Hoodie. But more specifically, MNDR is the dopest electronic artist coming out of NYC today. This girl takes gear to the next level, with a final outcome sounding RAAAAARW -Rawer. Harder, motherfucking satisfying. Listenable again and again and again and.... you can learn all this with your ears in this interview with MNDR in her Manhattan studio.

Also, Ruffeo never actully goes by Ruffeo, he goes by Nameless.
That's the name he goes by when he raps, and he's doing an East Coast Tour, including a special appearance with MNDR at Death By Audio October 19th 9 PM all ages. Debuting RHLS Fall 3009 ------- The "this is what pha shun sounds like?" tour. Price to be announced aiming for free to $5 donation. Hopefully RHLS can give away a free shot of whiskey with every beer purchase.
Nameless is really excited to be opening up for Dillon James Rego of the band Alaskas, very special comrad from Seattle, fuck yeah four weeks of dude time! Also Junk Prints will be making a cameo on the "runway"debuting her latest collection.

Yeah, It fucking RAINED. But we had fun didn't we kids? Thousands of new and old school RHLSers rolled through the booth. They repped hard, we repped hard, we got wet. Clothes were sold, prices were dropped to ridiculously low levels, people got happy. People got educated, I had to eventually make a sign that read: "Our clothing COST$ more than Forever 21 because it was made in the united states by human beings who were not exploited in the process" So we didnt have to repeatedly explain why our hoodies cost more than 20 dollars.

My experience so far has been great! Its a lot of work, but its an real life introduction to the way small businesses work. There is always something to do, and it never gets boring. There are seemingly endless things you can learn by working with RHLS. I started the program with no knowledge of the way small fashion companies work, but I finished with enough almost enough knowledge to make my own clothing. I have been helping make patterns using these patterns to cut fabric, silk screening and seeing how sewing works. Through the hearts program over the last two weeks, I have learned the basics of working in an independent, handmade clothing fashion company. It has inspired me to such a level that I plan to start designing my own clothing, as well as silk screens. The hearts program is a great experience for any respectable, hard working individual who wants to learn more about the handmade fashion movement.
Maxwell read this post, and he said it sucked, so I'm just going to talk about a day in the life of a full time apprentice. I stayed with Max and Sarah in an extra room in their Brooklyn apartment. Every morning around eleven, I would wake up to dozens of fresh bug bites, or the loud bang of a trash can full of junk hitting my window, being lowered down on a rope from the apartment above. I then would walk through the apartment, past the many crocodile skins on the walls and the ere portraits of poddles to take a shower in a bathroom with no light. I would then either take the train then a bus, or ride my bike. If I took the train, the wait for the bus would usually take about 20 minutes, and then when it finally came, I had to hope that it wasn't so full that it didn't have enough room for the people waiting at the bus stop. Once I get to work, I normally would start work right away. Normally I would just cut out fabric for sweaters, pockets, or underwear for a few hours. Occasionally I would go to the market to get food for the RHLS crew. Once I was done cooking food, and eating it with the RHLS crew, I would start work once again. I would normally work to around midnight or one. I would then take my bike back to the apartment, stay up till around 4 or 5 with my cousin on his roof, then go to bed and repeat the cycle the next day. What the fuck it's the best band in brooklyn, These Are Powers. It was an extreme honor to work with Annna Barie, Pat Noecker, and Bill Salas- cus its like- RHLS makes functional art and this felt like butter and pan cakes makin love on a hot skillet. You know? Touchin down on visual melody makin = the source of inspiration for RHLS: Mackswell and Sarah first started making clothing to costume Nameless (aka Ruffeo aka Mackswell) for his Rap-Puppetry performances, Outfitting TAP was feelin up the earth chakra!!!!

BANG!

Jacqueline Castel director of "Easy Answers" will blow your brains out. Her use of time lapsing and pan/zooming is HARD, a perfect accompaniment to TAP's eerie epic sound. Use of light and color: give this woman an emmy. The paper bling props alone offer hours of visual stimulation. I'm not going to analyze the music video's meaning, that's for you to do. I will say that these props look like they took months of craftsmanship, bringing a warmth and depth that only comes with invested thoughtful brains and hands. Anna told me some of the props (boom boxes, tapes) were made by artist friends of hers but I don't know who they are.. Whoever you are I thank you.

We are looking for people interested in gaining experience making clothes and learning how to build a business. We are called Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty. We make everything we sell by hand in our beautiful workshop in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This would be beneficial to any person who would like to learn the entire process of creating a product, solving problems creatively, and thinking in a local based economy, creating a sustainable business.

The working environment here is very communal, the space is absolutely gorgeous, right on the water with a view of the statue of liberty! You would get experience/get trained in pattern making, cutting patterns with a industrial rotary knife, learn about systematic production, custom fitting, tailoring, upcycling deadstock fabric/clothing, sourcing materials from manufacturer waste, building silk screens, coating silkscreens, exposing silk screens, preparing transparencies for screens and the technique of silk screening. You will be using a 4 screen silk screen press, and a flash cure unit, leaning how to register different layers of prints.

There is the opportunity to learn how to sew if you are willing to work with us for the longer term, we would love to have you as long as you like, but this apprenticeship is for a minimum of 1 days a week for a month up to four days a week for 3 months. Everything is negotiable. If both RHLS and you would like to stay longer or shorter we will work it out.

As far as our background goes, we are entering our 3rd year. We sell all around the USA and Europe, Asia. We sell at Patria Field in New York (costume designer for Sex In The City, Ugly Betty) and were recently on CBS Sunday Morning News/ Martha Stewart teaching Mo Rocca how to sew a sweatshirt. We were a featured seller on Etsy.com. We were winners of Fred Flare's "Next Big Thing" contest. And we maintain a guest segment on Threadbanger.com, doing tutorials and Upcycling Recon Tours.
